Dr Lisa Ryan is Head of Department of Sport, Exercise and Nutrition at Atlantic Technological University (ATU), Ireland. Dr. Lisa Ryan has an extensive background in working with has a first-class honors degree in the food and Nutritional Science and a PhD in Nutritional Biochemistry from University College Cork. Dr Ryan moved to the UK to a Senior Lectureship at Bournemouth University before moving on to another Senior Lectureship at Oxford Brookes University in 2008 where she joined the Functional Food Centre (FFC) and established the Phytochemical Research Group.
Since arriving at ATU (initially as head of department of Natural Sciences) in 2015, Dr Ryan has established new areas of study in Sport & Exercise Science and Public Health Nutrition and received Enterprise Ireland funding in 2017 to establish the Medicinal Nutrition and Sport thematic research group extending the capabilities of the MET Gateway at ATU. She is currently leading three European Projects focused primarily on Females in Food Entrepreneurship and supporting their development. Along with this Lisa has been accountable for the development of the new Medicinal Nutrition theme of the MET Gateway at ATU. Current areas of research include functional foods, metabolic health, food entrepreneurship and the Irish Concussion Research centre in ATU. While she is additionally a scientific advisor with The Kerry Health and Nutrition Institute and the Accreditation for Nutritionists (AfN).
